How To Cook Chilli Fish Gravy Like A Pro!

Chilli fish is also known as Fish Manchurian or fish chilli. It’s a Chinese fish curry or you may call Indianized Chinese cuisine. It’s quite simple and doesn’t take much time to prepare. You can cook it for your kids, family, and friends and people love it because of its tangy flavor. Let’s take a quick look at the ingredients which are necessary to make Chilli fish gravy.


  • Fish: 500 gms, boneless or fleshy, cubed. Any kind of boneless fish (butter fish etc.) is appropriate for this chilli fish gravy dish. This quantity serves 4 persons.
  • Marinate:

Ginger garlic paste(1/2 tsp)

Lime Juice (1/2 tsp or half lime)

Pepper powder (1/4 tsp)

Red chili powder (1/4 tsp)

Salt as per taste

  • For the batter:

Flour (4 tbsp)

Cornflour (2 tbsp)

Soya sauce (1 tsp)

Pepper powder (1/4 tsp)

Kashmiri chili powder( 1/2 tsp)

Soda powder (A fat pinch- optional)

Salt as per taste

  • For gravy

White part of green onion: Minced, 3 springs

Garlic: 3/4 cloves, fine chopped

Kashmiri chili powder: 1/2-1 tsp as per your taste

Pepper powder: 1/2 tsp

Soya sauce: 1 tsp

Tomato sauce: 2 tbsp

Sugar: 1/4 tsp

Green chili: 2 slit green chilies

Cornflour: 3/4 tbsp

Water: About 1/2 cup

Fresh spring onions: 3 tbsp, finely chopped


  1. Marinate the fish cubes with all the ingredients under the point of ‘marinate’ and keep it aside for at least 15 minutes.

2. Take all the masalas and other stuff for preparing the batter in a bowl and mix properly. Make sure it does not become watery or too thick. The Batter is just for coating the fish. Dip each cube into this batter and fry in hot oil adequately. After that keep the fried fish aside



3. Take 2 tbsp oil in a frypan or Kadai and let it heat. Now add minced garlic, chopped spring onions or simply onions. Saute for a minute and then add 1-1/2 tsp pepper powder and salt. Mix it thoroughly.

4. Now add 2 tbsp tomato sauce or u can add puree if you don’t have the sauce with you, 1 tsp soya sauce, 2 green chilies (chopped) and 1/4 tsp sugar. Stir well.

5. After that, add 3/4 tbsp cornflour into 1/2 cup water and mix thoroughly so that no lump is left. Pour this into pan/kadai. This will thicken after boiling. Now taste the quantity of salt.

6. Now it’s the time to start the game with fried fish. Add fish pieces. stir softly so that the fish remains intact. I’m sure you won’t like to have broken or crumbled fishes while serving.

7. Remember your chopped spring onions? Sprinkle those over the fishes, let it discharge its aromatic flavor.


8. Serve hot and tangy Chilli fish gravy with Roti or fried rice. Enjoy!
